Research in Antarctica

We have several projects focused on Antarctica with data collected opportunistically in collaboration with Penguin Watch

News and publications

2022 cruise on NatGeo Endurance:

Scientists from Penguin Watch regularly join tourist cruise ships to access sites in the Antarctic. In 2022, I joined to add some freshwater sampling to their remit. Three projects have emerged from this trip:

  1. The biodiversity of Peter I Island – the most remote island in the world

  2. Do penguin mediated marine subsidies fuel freshwater food webs?

  3. Long-term monitoring of remote lakes

2019 trip to Deception Island:

In 2019, my project was selected to join the Spanish Antarctic Campaign. I was taken to  Deception Island (on HMS Hesperides) where I spent a month collecting samples to characterise how microbial communities change across temperature gradients, Much like our Ring of Fire project, we use natural temperature gradients. Deception is an active volcano, so sediment on the beaches can be over 70°C!
